Her father telling her to go BOTHER Miss Spink and Forcible. Having her daughter remind her to buy her new clothes or sheвЂ™ll forget. I know this is present in the film too and is the whole point of wanting to stay with the Beldam, but do Coraline parents even care about her? They just want her out of their hair it seems like, not even bothering to act like parents. Interesting things of note I took away from the story:

There is no doll that watches her like the one in the movie so the Beldam canвЂ™t spy on her that way. Coraline does not witness his jumping mice circus in the other world. BobinskyвЂ™s name in the book is Mr Bobo and not told to us until the very end of the story. An old resident named Mr Lovat is mentioned, but never seen. The main differences between book and movie I would say is that Wybie Lovat does not exist in the book, nor does his grandma.

Honestly, I donвЂ™t think she has the energy or the magic to complete a full illusion. The Other Father doesnвЂ™t sing her a special song he wrote about her or show her a garden with her likeness in order to please her. The rats arenвЂ™t disguised as mice in this world and she doesnвЂ™t disguise her appearance perfectly. Which then shows us that the Beldam puts in less effort in this world than she does in the movie. Coraline doesnвЂ™t see this until later in the movie.

But in the book Coraline clocks on immediately that itвЂ™s not a true copy of her mother: her fingers are too long, sheвЂ™s too thin and tall, her skin is too white. Now the only indication in the movie that the Beldam is something other at first is the buttons for eyes. Opposite uses of the painting, but itвЂ™s still a nice callback that the film used a similar painting at all. This is repeated again with the painting of the fruit, which towards the end when the Beldam gives up then illusion shows the brown apple core and missing grapes, etc. This is indication to us that the other world isnвЂ™t a good place and Coraline is in danger. Coraline says he looks at the bubbles like heвЂ™s about to do something devious to them and that it had a sinister feel. However in the book the blue boy is staring at bubbles I guess? And in the other world, itвЂ™s not a happier version. This is supposed to symbolise how much better and happier everything is in the other world. In the other world, he has three scoops of ice cream heвЂ™s happily eating. In the movie the painting is of the blue boy in old fashioned clothes whose ice cream cone fell.

Something else I clocked on that is similar but almost different is the painting.

She puts the hand and the key inside the well at the end, but is that a portal to the other world? WhatвЂ™s so special about the well? Do we ever get an answer about this? Why even mention the well at all? If itвЂ™s hidden so well and boarded up, chances are unless someone mentioned it, Coraline wouldnвЂ™t have even known it existed in order to mess with it. And then I wondered by the well was so dangerous. You can see the same fairy ring in the movie placed around the well.

The first thing I noticed that was the same in the book and movie was the fairy ring with the toadstools. As I was reading the book, fresh from watching the movie, I just clocked some of the things I thought were interesting about both. The plot of both is actually pretty spot on the same, including some lines straight up repeated word for word, which is pretty cool. I wanted to talk about the things that were the same, small plot differences, details within both, and how they both functioned as stellar works of art that can be enjoyed and theorised about extensively. ItвЂ™s been a while since I was entertained by both, so I decided to reread the Neil Gaiman book and rewatch the movie.
